Founded by award-winning poet and choreographer Helen Calcutt, Beyond Words transforms human experience and narrative into fiercely animated, whole-bodied choreography.
Rejecting vague abstraction in text-based dance, our work carries the instant life of the words, rooted in the communicative power of language that defines and connects us all.
At the heart of our work is Hypha, our signature codified gestural vocabulary, through which text is rigorously physicalised and experienced.
Around this, we fuse contemporary and urban practices to forge rhythmic, articulated, and expansive material that fully embodies words and their impact.
In performance, we connect—ourselves and audiences—to the playful and dark interior of personhood, speaking who we are, and how life has shaped us.
Themes are explored through otherworldly design, bodies, and cinematic soundscapes, taking direct yet visceral routes into difficult subjects. Audience discussion is also an essential part of our live process.
