ABOUT
BEYOND WORDS is a pioneering dance-theatre company, founded by poet and choreographer Helen Calcutt.
We present text in ways never before experienced — holding space for words to learn their physical power. Our work is story-driven and tender, often tracing the human experience through themes of grief, belonging, and transformation.

In performance, our dancers build living, breathing dialogues and worlds. Rooted in the unfiltered textures of lived-experience, and a shared vulnerability, our work reaches outwards, inviting audiences to witness powerful new modes of physical storytelling that break the boundaries of language.

At the heart of our practice is Hypha — a groundbreaking choreographic method of text-to-dance translation. Realised through gesture, physical dynamism, and ensemble-based staging, Hypha enables true integration of artistic form: where words and meanings are embodied kinetically, spatially, and visually, allowing narratives to resonate across languages, bodies, and expressions.

Through ongoing research, we continue to push the boundaries of form — building on the experimental to create vibrant, accessible, and multisensory dance works that transcend culture and experience.

Our work has been consistently awarded funding by Arts Council England, supported by One Dance U.K., the Birmingham REP, FABRIC Dance, and the Society of Authors.
